Been speaking with a 23-year old med rep (let’s call him Marty).Marty just got offered a new role as a territory manager.And a lot will change for him:- Moving east coast to west coast- No state income tax to California taxes- From $70k income to $250k on-target earningsSo I applaud him for reaching out for help.He’s done well by working hard and saving some money.But he knows managing $250k income is much different from $70k.A lot of people prefer waiting till their overwhelmed to search for help.But not Marty. Marty’s proactive and knows the help is needed.He’d rather set himself up correctly from the start.And here’s why this is the right attitude to have.Because once he starts his new job and sees an increase in income.He’ll be tempted to inflate his lifestyle to match his new earnings.He might want to buy a new car or rent an expensive apartment.But instead he’ll have a plan in place to save $100k+ per year.What if he waited a few years though?He’d miss out on the early head start he’s getting.He’d be 27, making a few hundred grand, but have nothing to show for it.And that's where most med device reps are when they first reach out to me.This is why financial planning is so important during major changes.A lot of sales reps would rather wait for things to settle down.But this may cause you to miss out on an early retirement.
