Pittsburgh 9 Sunday's Games O'Neal upbeat after surgery ORLANDO, Fia. (AP) Shaquille O'Neal walked out of a hospital with a cast around his right hand Thursday, grinning and chatting with his mother after surgery to repair a broken right thumb. The 7-foot-1, 320-pound center for the Orlando Magic underwent a routine procedure on his right thumb that will sideline him until about Christmas, his doctor said. "Six to eight weeks, that's the usual prognosis," said Dr.

Richard Shure, who removed a tiny bone chip and inserted a steel pin to completely immobilize the thumb. O'Neal hopes to return by Christmas Day, when the Magic entertain the Houston Rockets, who swept Orlando in last season's NBA Finals. O'Neal would miss 27 of 82 regular-season games. O'Neal, who avoided reporters after the operation, made a thumbs-up sign and quipped, "Let's get it over," when he walked into Sand Lake Hospital for the surgery. His mother, Lucille, accompanied him and stayed with him during the operation.

"The surgery was relatively routine," said Shure, a specialist with Jewett Orthopaedic Clinic. NBA, CBA SIGN PACT The NBA and the Continental Basketball Association announced Thursday they have signed an extension of their agreement calling for the CBA to serve as the official developmental league of the NBA for players and referees. The 1995-1996 season is the 16th year of such cooperation. The two leagues first signed an agreement for referee development in 1978-79. It was extended to players in 1980-81.

BULLS SIGN EDWARDS The Chicago Bulls signed James Edwards, who will be 40 on Nov. 22. "We are happy to have Jimmy," general manager Jerry Krause said. "He brings a wealth of experience to our team." The 7-foot-1 center has 18 years of NBA experience, playing in 1,104 games with seven teams, averaging 13.0 points and 5 2 rebounds per game. He was a member of the Detroit Pistons' championship teams in 1 989 and 1 990.

Edwards will back up Luc Longley and Bill Wennington in what Krause has dubbed "the three-headed monster," replacing Will Perdue, traded to San Antonio during the offseason for Dennis Rodman. SPREWELL CLEARED A judge has dismissed misdemeanor traffic charges against Golden State Warriors guard Latrell Sprewell. Sprewell was stopped Sept. 3 and arrested for various traffic violations, including having an outstanding warrant for driving with a suspended licence. He also was booked for investigation of threatening a police officer after reportedly telling the arresting officer, "You can be shot real easy, and people get shot out here." Prosecutors said they did not charge Sprewell with threatening the officer because the basketball player's comments "lacked credibility and immediacy as a righteous threat." Sprewell lawyer, Kurt Robinson, said a speeding charge was dropped because of insufficient evidence.

The charge of driving with a suspended license was dismissed because Sprewell got a new license 1 7 days after the Sept. 3 stop. Sprewell did not appear in Oakland Municipal Court for the dismissal Wednesday, but he sent a letter of apology. PAYTON FACES PATERNITY SUIT A woman filed a paternity suit Thursday against Seattle Supersonics guard Gary Payton, seeking 20 percent of his annual income for support of a 3-year-old son she says he fathered. Kimberly Sparks seeks to establish Payton as the natural father of Gary Dwayne Payton Jr.

Payton has said he has supported the child for three years and will continue to do so if DNA tests show he is the father. The tests taken three weeks ago may take up to another three weeks to be complete, said John A. Sopuch III, the lawyer representing Sparks. Sparks' lawsuit, filed in Cook County court, states that she became pregnant while she and Payton lived together in Seattle in 1992. Her son was born prematurely in Chicago, spent his early months in an incubator and incurred tens of thousands of dollars in medical expenses.

Payton's agent did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment. DUCKWORTH REMAINS A BUCK The Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday decided to keep center Kevin Duckworth, who will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Friday. Bucks coach Mike Dunleavy considered rescinding the trade that brought Duckworth from Washington when he learned of Duckworth's injury, sustained in his last preseason game with the Bullets. Instead the Bucks, who are in dire need of help at center, modified the trade for Duckworth, who was dealt to Milwaukee on Oct. 18 for forward Bobb McCann.

However, team officials didn't disclose what changes were made. 16 SOUTH CAROLINA 147 Gus Syl van, Columbia. 36-3773 Frank Ford III. Charleston. SC.
