Game Recap: Softball |

JAMESTOWN, N.D. --The Southwest Minnesota State softball team notched 13 hits and touted strong pitching to sweep the University of Mary by scores of 2-1 and 7-5 indoors at the Jamestown Dome on Saturday afternoon. The series was moved to Jamestown from Bismarck due to expected wintry weather conditions.

UMary drops to 7-21 on the season and is winless in conference play at 0-6. The Mustangs are now sitting at 13-18 overall and are .500 in the NSIC at 4-4.

Jillian Noel and Molly Bull both had clutch hits late in game one to push the Mustangs across the finish line.

The first five innings of the game were very quiet, with neither team able to get its bats going to gain momentum.

The Mustangs finally broke the ice in the sixth inning. Mikayla Berge led off the inning by beating out a grounder to second base before stealing second to find herself in scoring position. Abby Russell moved her to third on a single to right field and advanced to second on the throw before Jillian Noel delivered a sac fly to left field, scoring Berge and giving SMSU the 1-0 lead.

In the following at-bat Molly Bull also knocked a sac fly, this time to center field to score Russell and put the Mustangs ahead by two runs going into the final inning.

UMary tried to make a comeback in the seventh inning but ended up falling short after cutting the deficit to one run.

Morgyn Otte (6-7) was on fire in the circle, allowing just one hit through the first six innings of the ball game. Otte gave up a run in the seventh inning but held off the last-ditch effort from the Marauders to secure the win. Otte gave up one earned run on just four hits and struck out six batters in a complete game.

The Mustangs utilized seven different batters getting a hit to push themselves past the Marauders in game two.

SMSU got to work right away in the second inning, plating five runs on four hits and a walk to jump out to an early 5-0 lead. Molly Bull led off the inning with a single to center field and moved to second on a ground ball before Paris Van Dyke moved her to third on a base-hit to left field. Van Dyke stole second and Abby Boxrud drew a walk to load the bases for Emma Humpal, who knocked an RBI-single to give SMSU its first run of the game.

Van Dyke scored on a fielder's choice before Paige Ahrendt hit a sac fly to center field to score Boxrud and give SMSU the 3-0 lead. Abby Russell capped off the big inning with a triple down the left-field line that scored two more runners.

Both teams added a run in the fifth inning and SMSU tacked on one more in the top of the seventh before a late game surge from the Marauders threatened the sweep. The first two Mary batters of the seventh inning were walked then advanced to second and third on a fly out to center field. The Marauders plated their first run of the inning on a single before a costly error scored two more runs to cut the lead to 7-4. A ground-rule double scored the final UMary run.

Karlie Miller (7-9) earned the win in game two, allowing just one earned run on five hits and a walk, while striking out four in five innings. Abby Russell led the way at the plate, going 2 for 3 at the dish with three RBIs.

SMSU returns to the field on Wednesday, April 3, playing a doubleheader at Augustana University with first pitch at 2 p.m.
