This Homemade Bloody Mary mix is really good! Plus, you're getting a serving or two of vegetables....bottoms up!
Well, I never liked Bloody Mary’s, there was something about drinking alcohol and tomato juice that seemed so contradictory to me. Then, one weekend we were at a pub crawl in Pacific Beach, California and I had it: THE BLOODY MARY! It was served with shrimp, olives, salami, and cheese. I thought I was in heaven. A drink and a snack. For a foodie, that’s just fantastic. It tasted amazing!
Fast forward 10 years (waaaaaay beyond my pub crawling days) and I still like them. Who knew! So, in the spirit of using up all of the tomatoes from my garden, I decided to try making my own homemade Bloody Mary mix. Oh yeah, it’s really good! Plus, you’re getting a serving or two of vegetables….bottoms up!
Yield: Makes approximately 4 quarts
This Homemade Bloody Mary mix is really good! Plus, you're getting a serving or two of vegetables....bottoms up!
Ingredients
- 20 large tomatoes, quartered
- 4 carrots, chopped
- 4 ribs celery, diced
- 2 medium sweet onions, diced
- 3 green peppers (seeds removed), chopped
- 2 large banana peppers (seeds removed), chopped
- 2-4 jalapeños (seeds removed), chopped -- add more or less depending on how much heat you like
- 8 garlic cloves, minced
- 3" piece fresh ginger, peeled and chopped
- 1 bunch fresh parsley, ripped up
- 1/3 cup coconut sugar
- 1/2 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice
- 2 Tbsp sea salt
- 1 tsp fresh ground black pepper
- 1 tsp paprika
- 3 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce (add more to taste)
- 2 Tbsp fresh horseradish (or homemade horseradish)
Instructions
1. Place all the vegetables in a large pot on the stove, over medium-high heat and bring to a boil.
2. Turn heat down to medium and allow to simmer until everything is soft, generally about 1-2 hours.
3. Remove from heat and allow to cool (you do not want to get splashed with hot liquid in the next step!).
4. Using an immersion blender, puree the sauce in the soup kettle until its nice and liquid.
5. If you'd prefer less pulp, run the mixture through a fine sieve. We like the pulp so we leave it as is. It can take on a more bitter flavor if you leave the tomato seeds in too, so it's up to you if you want to run it through a sieve. We like the flavor!
6. Add the sugar, lemon juice, sea salt, pepper, paprika and Worcestershire sauce. Stir to combine.
7. Pour the mixture into clean canning jars and process them via your preferred method. We prefer to use our Foodsaver with canister attachment to seal the jars. You can also leave 1-2" headroom in the jars and freeze it.
8. To make a Bloody Mary, fill a tall glass with ice, add vodka, and top with Bloody Mary Mix.
9. Serve garnished with olives, pickles, cheese, salami, shrimp or lime wedges. Best served in a glass rimmed with salt and pepper.
10. Enjoy (responsibly)!
Notes
Here is my recipe for the fresh horseradish sauce.

- Now if you want to make it taste REALLY GOOD, then add some essential oils to your glass. We love, love, LOVE the flavor when we add one drop black pepper EO, 2 drops lime or lemon EO, and occasionally 1 drop ginger EO. They give this drink an entirely new level of flavor!!!

Can you process these via water bath canning? I would think there is enough acidity with the tomatoes and lemon juice that it would be a safe method? Thanks!

Yes, you can definitely process via a water bath canning!

Can you substitute something for coconut sugar?

You can just leave it out, or sub your favorite sweetener.

Hi! About how long will this keep once canned?

If canned correctly, it will be good for years!

Thank you! This turned out great! My kids love “vegetable juice,” but our favorite store bought mix is expensive. I made a double batch with all of our tomatoes picked before they froze. I left out the sugar because our tomatoes were on the sweeter side and we’ll add the horseradish as needed since it’s too spicy for our boys. Thanks again!

I am definitely going to give this a try! I love a good Bloody Mary and can’t wait to try making my own. Do you have any idea about how many pounds 20 large tomatoes would equal? I have an assortment of sizes of tomatoes as I had to quickly pick before disease took over.
